Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effects of self-care in the relationship between job stress and psychological burnout experienced by counselors according to their counseling experience. The subjects of this study comprised 179 counselors. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson¡¯s correlation and hierarchical regression analysis and a simple slope test of variance was then used to verify the moderating effect. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the job stress of the novice counselors showed a positive correlation with psychological burnout and self-care showed a negative correlation between work-related stress and whole job stress levels. It also showed a negative correlation with psychological burnout. Second, the job stress of the experienced counselor showed a positive correlation with psychological burnout, and self-care showed a negative correlation with psychological burnout. Third, self-care did not show any moderating effect on the relationship between job stress and psychological burnout of the novice counselors. Fourth, self-care showed a moderating effect in the relationship between job stress sub-factors(work-related stress, counseling-related stress), whole job stress and psychological burnout of the experienced counselors. This study, reveals indicates that the higher the self-care of the experienced counselor, the lower the effect of stress on burnout. Therefore, self-care has been proven to have a mediating moderating effect and self-care has been suggested as a significant moderating variable. This study is of significance in that it provides valuable theoretical data which can be used when developing programs designed to prevent burnout in experienced counselors.
